The Chief of Police position is a terribly political office. It is difficult and thankless. Recent events, however, require the buck to stop *somewhere*. Blair is no leader and his resignation will not be a loss.

The actions of the Chief of Police were to incite fear, so that regular folks would be afraid to protest. Whether it was lying about a non existent 5 metre rule or his quote on the police website that those who protested peacefully were "aligning yourselves with criminals". I feel our city can do better and would like a Police Chief that understands protesting is a part of democracy NOT a threat to it.

The actions of the police during the g20 summit in Toront this past weekend disgusted me. The snatch n grabs, the police disguised as black block anarchists, the blocking everyone in and not lettin them go, unnecesary force, and too many wrongful arrests. Made me sick to watch. Makes me very unproud to be Canadian.

Regardless of whether or not he was pressured from other members of the security team to ask for/adopt the PWPA, I expect my Chief of Police to stand up for the constitutional integrity of his job and the Police Department. And of course, this means stopping violent riots not peaceful protests - he failed on both accounts. He is clearly not committed to serving and protecting citizens or upholding the constitutional law. He is an unfit leader for the Police Department. He should be punished for his lawbreaking and negligence within the fullest extent of the law.

Assault, theft of property, destruction of private property, arrest without cause, unlawful search and seizure, unlawful confinement, etc. are serious crimes that video and photo evidence documents his officers being guilty of. On Saturday, as part of the "curious and naive," I witnessed police running from the Black Bloc like coward while I, with a broken arm, stopped to tell citizens to leave stores that could be targeted and run north on Yonge Street. I was bullied and intimidated by the police. I cannot walk down the street today without fearing that someone in a minivan will drive up and kidnap people.

Bill Blair has abused his position as the Toronto Chief of Police to lie and mislead the public (re: The Public Works Protection Act) by saying that he knew the law was moot, yet did nothing to inform the public with the hopes that it would "keep the criminals out." He then authorized an unlawful detention of peaceful protesters at the Novotel on Saturday June 26 and at the intersection of Queen and Spadina in Toronto on June 27. For these omissions, criminal negligence and morally reprehensible behaviour, I ask that Bill Blair be removed immediately from his seat as the Toronto Chief of Police.

There cannot be any justification for the arrests and police assaults on peaceful protesters and innocent bystanders (while thugs and vandals did damage and thousands of police officers literally stood by and watched). Under Bill Blair, the actions of the "Security" and police force at the G20 broke the public trust. It will be years - if ever - that that wound will be healed to the point at which we, the public, can trust the police again. Bill Blair must be held accountable.

In addition to the gross ineptitude with which he handled events over the G20 weekend, Blair has been caught lying to and deliberately misleading the public. This is unacceptable behaviour for ANY officer supposed to represent the public interest, much less the chief of Toronto police. Allowing him to remain in office after his breach of trust and failure in his duties would send a clear and dangerous message to police across Canada that they are unaccountable for their words and actions, and irreparably damage public confidence in the police service. Resign now.

I was detained for peacefully protesting during the G20. I was held for a total of nearly 24 hours, and am absolutely disgusted with the level of police brutality i observed throughout the Saturday afternoon/evening that I was in Toronto and free. The conditions in the facility were poor, built to physically and mentally wear prisoners down. The officers on the media tour gave reporters contradictory information versus my experience in the center. Bill Blair has lied about police using rubber bullets, has lied about police powers during the summit, has requested fascist unprecedented police powers in the first place, and has continually misled and played down important human rights violations by officers under his control over the G20 weekend.

What has happened is unconstitutional. There is such a thing as the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Learn it, live it, love it.
I was unlucky enough to be outside during last weekend, and it was horrific. I narrowly escaped a beating and detainment by a couple of seconds.
The police started charging all the way from Spadina to Cameron Street without warning. I couldn't run fast enough. I got knocked into a wall by panicked people running behind me, and looked back and saw the police were only 15ft away. It was terrifying. I must have screamed because suddenly the door a shop door opened up and I ducked inside just in time The guy who worked there shut the door behind meas the police charged past.
The crowd was made up of mostly Queen Streeters going about their business who stopped to see what was happening, or were there to show support for those who had been unfairly treated by the police.
I haven't been sleeping much since then Saturday. Every time I close my eyes, I see lines of riot cops.
There is no reason why this should have happened.

It's simply ridiculous the way that Blair has vilified peaceful protestors while allowing violent protestors to wreak havoc on our city. Why were the Black Bloc allowed to cause damage in an unimpeded way for 1.5 hours? Why were the police cars left so long to burn? Were these PR stunts aimed at showing the public that the 1.2 billion spent on this summit was justified? Did William Blair allow the Black Bloc to wreak havoc so that he and his goons could crack down peaceful protestors, many of whom were demonstrating in a designated protest zone? Is our right to peaceful assembly not protected in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
Conditions in the detention centre on Eastern Avenue were deplorable, a further abuse of civil rights. Reports show male police officers strip-searching female detainees and threatening gang rape. Reports further show that detainees were deprived of adequate food and water, of blankets, of toilet paper, etc., and that there was not enough space in the cages for detainees to even sleep. We’ve seen pictures of small, windowless solitary confinement cells. These are conditions tantamount to torture; people who have not been charged and have not yet been found guilty should not be subject to such conditions. Despite all the human rights abuses that went on, both in the facility at Eastern Avenue and on the streets of Toronto, only a small number of people were charged. Many of them will be filing lawsuits.
Further evidence of Blair knowing that he's in the wrong come in the form of the media event he held the other day, wherein he displayed a number of so-called "weapons," many of which were seized from people who were not even protesting – A chainsaw! Arrows and a crossbow! Chainmail! – many of which were common, everyday items many average people carry on a day-to-day-basis, not necessarily for violent purpose. He's trying to show us how dangerous protestors are, but video after video shows that it is the police, more so than protestors, who are those from whom we should expect violence. (There are also allegations, perhaps only rumours at this point, that police infiltrated the Black Bloc as agent provocateurs. If this is true, those participating police officers are guilty of something akin to entrapment. This is, if I’m not mistaken, illegal. It’s something police have done before, in Montebello, Quebec, and other places besides.)
The world has been watching. The unjust amount and nature of police force used over the G20 weekend is something Blair ought to be ashamed of. Certainly, I, as a citizen of Toronto, am most wholeheartedly so. For impeding democratic discussion and violating human rights, I call for William Blair to step down as chief of police in the City of Toronto.

He must be held accountable for his actions!

Puerile dismissal of concerns for civil liberties and the safety of citizens is not something we want in a police chief. I'm sure he's a good man, but his glibness at the press conference on June 29th was disgusting. Get him out.

Your resignation is the first step towards rebuilding the trust the people of Toronto should have for their police, a trust you threw away with your deception about the 5 metre law and the weapons photo-op.

Blair may not have been in complete control, but he is responsible for the excesses of police and mistreatment of detainees at least until such time as he explains how he lost control and who he lost it to.

Chief Blair: I am a Toronto resident of 17 years. I was appalled by the inconsistencies in police tactics and command behaviour that I witnessed first hand this weekend. While I recognize that most individual officers acted with professionalism and restraint, I find your dismissal of public concerns about these inconsistencies to be disingenuous and irresponsible at best. (For example: suggestions in media interviews and emails posted on the TPS website that anyone who questions police conduct is an anarchist sympathizer or siding with "Criminals".) You (and Mayor David Miller) must not forget that you are accountable to the citizens of Toronto. Some events during the G20 have already done possibly irreparable damage to the public image of the Toronto Police Service. To prevent further damage to this image and the service's reputation, I demand you resign.

Not fit to be the Chief Of Police in a multi-cultural, financially diverse and densely populated city such as Toronto.
The events of the G20 proved that I have lost all faith in our Police -- which after having lived in many other countries - most more volatile than Canada certainly - I am both surprised and saddened to declare.
The public's confidence in authority has been shattered -- and if Mr Blair had been honest from the start then this wouldn't have turned so ugly.

Even across the country in Vancouver I can't stand to see this kind of arrogance and subversive behaviour by a Canadian police force and it's chief. A resignation/removal plus a full investigation as to how and why this was allowed to happened should be the very least we take as a course of action.
